The arrests of opposition members during the pandemic are not really about public health. Instead, they are a way to stop people from speaking out. ZANU PF is using the law unfairly, which hurts the rights of everyone in Zimbabwe. This leaves the opposition open to being arrested for no good reason, with help from a biased former National Prosecuting Authority.

Recently, in Mashonaland West, there was a clear example of how the opposition is being attacked by a weak state that uses chaos to hide its corrupt actions. By using the law as a tool, ZANU PF can do whatever it wants without fear of punishment, while its own members stay safe from any charges, no matter what they do wrong.

The police force, which should protect the people, is instead being used by ZANU PF for its own gain. There have been no reforms to turn it into a service that serves the citizens. The ruling party ignores the constitution whenever it wants, using the legal system to stay in power. The suspension of by-elections and actions by the electoral commission have also damaged Zimbabwe’s democracy.

ZANU PF seems to want a one-party state, like the Chinese Communist Party. This would make ZANU PF unaccountable and put the rights of the people at risk. This grab for power is a serious threat to Zimbabwe’s democracy and needs to be noticed by the international community.

It’s important to recognize these issues and stand together against this oppression. Attacks on the opposition are attacks on every Zimbabwean who values freedom and justice. The pandemic should not be used as an excuse to grab more power and weaken democratic values.

As citizens, we need to be alert and demand that our leaders answer for their actions. We should work towards a Zimbabwe where democracy is strong, laws are followed, and the people’s voices are heard. Only by working together can we protect our country’s future from falling into authoritarian rule.
